Express goals involving abilities or intended results.
The rule
The verb structure (non-past or potential) + ように can express a desired objective, especially when it is desired that a capacity or state becomes possible.
Examples
にほんごがはなせるようにべんきょうしています。
I'm studying to speak Japanese.
わすれないようにメモします。
I'll take a note so I don't forget.
Remember
- ように is used in particular to target a capacity or avoid a situation.
- Express goals involving abilities or intended results.
Common mistake
Consider ように and ために as always interchangeable: choice depends on construction and direction.
