The rule
The potential or negative form + ようになる indicates that a capacity or habit has evolved over time.
Examples
にほんごがすこしはなせるようになりました。
I became able to speak a little Japanese.
はやくおきるようになりました。
I used to get up early.
Remember
- ようになった reports an evolution, not just a one-time possibility.
- Describe a change that has become possible.
Common mistake
Consolidate ～ようにする (try to) and ～ようになる (change noted).
